Center Aisle Stall Barns
Stalls down both sides with a covered aisle between. Works well in Ohio winters because you're never handling a horse outside in weather. Tack, feed, and wash stalls work into the footprint.
Shed Row Barns
Stalls in a line, each opening to the outside under an overhang. Cheaper per stall, excellent natural ventilation, and simple to expand. You're outdoors for chores.
Run-In & Loafing Sheds
Three-sided shelters for horses or cattle kept on pasture. Orientation against prevailing wind and enough depth that animals go all the way in are what make them work.
Indoor Riding Arenas
Clear-span arenas for year-round riding, typically 60x120 up to 80x200, engineered for the span and our snow load. Kickboards, footing base, and lighting layout are part of the design.

The Numbers That Make a Barn Work
These shape how a barn works day to day, and they cost almost nothing to get right at design time.
Stall Size
12x12 is standard for an average horse. 12x14 or 14x14 for larger breeds, mares foaling, or a horse that's stalled a lot. Going smaller causes problems with horses getting cast against the wall.
Aisle Width
Twelve feet minimum — anything narrower and you can't safely cross-tie a horse and walk past. Fourteen to sixteen if you'll drive a tractor or gator down it for cleaning and bedding.
Ceiling Height
Ten feet clear at minimum, twelve preferred. A rearing horse needs headroom, and height drives airflow. Low ceilings trap ammonia and heat right where the horse is breathing.
Door Openings
Stall doors four feet wide, aisle doors ten to twelve so equipment fits through. Sliding doors on the ends beat swing doors in wind and snow.
The Details That Make a Barn Work
A barn can look finished and still be awkward to keep horses in. These three details are usually where the difference shows.
Ventilation
Air enters at the eaves and exhausts through a ridge vent at the peak. We build continuous eave venting, a properly sized ridge vent, and open grillwork stall fronts so air moves between stalls instead of stagnating in each one.
Stall Walls That Take a Kick
Solid 2-inch hardwood or treated lumber to roughly four feet, grilled or barred above for airflow and visibility. Steel-framed stall fronts outlast wood-framed ones and don't get chewed. Metal edging anywhere a horse can reach.
Footing & Drainage
Compacted stone with mats in the stalls, concrete in aisles and wash stalls only. The pad sits above surrounding grade with ground falling away, and gutters move roof water well clear. A barn sitting in a wet spot ends up with soft floors and thrush problems.

Why Ventilation Matters Most
Respiratory problems in stabled horses trace back to air quality more than anything else. Ammonia from urine, dust from hay and bedding, and humidity all accumulate in a barn that doesn't move air, and horses breathe it at nose height in a closed stall.
A barn that works has a low-to-high airflow path. Dutch doors to the outside on each stall give you another path and let horses put their heads out. Fans help, but they don't substitute for a building designed to breathe. A sealed, insulated horse barn is generally the wrong approach in this climate — horses handle cold well and handle bad air poorly.
Tack Rooms, Feed Rooms, and Hay Storage
Tack rooms are worth insulating and finishing — leather in an unconditioned space in Ohio does not do well. Feed rooms need to be genuinely horse-proof, with a door that latches and stays latched, because a loose horse in a feed room is an emergency.
Hay storage overhead is traditional and saves footprint, but it adds structural load and puts a large amount of combustible material above the animals. Storing hay in a separate building or a lean-to is safer if you have the room. Either way, keep it out of the airflow path — hay dust is a big part of what horses end up breathing.
Exterior and Roofing
Exterior is 29-gauge painted steel roofing and siding, the same as our other post frame work, with a vapor barrier under the roof steel. Condensation dripping into stalls is a real problem in an unlined barn, and it's cheap to prevent at build time.
Permits and Agricultural Exemptions in Ohio
Agricultural buildings on qualifying property are generally exempt from the Ohio building code, and a horse barn on a working farm often falls under that. Township zoning still applies for setbacks and placement, and the exemption gets narrower if the operation is commercial — a boarding or lesson facility is a different category than a private barn.

What size should a horse stall be?

Should a horse barn be insulated?
Usually not the whole barn. Horses tolerate cold well but suffer in poorly ventilated air, and insulating tends to work against airflow. A vapor barrier under the roof steel to stop condensation is the important piece. Insulate the tack room, not the stalls.
Do I need a permit to build a horse barn in Ohio?
An agricultural building on qualifying property is generally exempt from the state building code, but township zoning and setback rules still apply. Commercial boarding or lesson facilities usually fall outside the exemption. We confirm which applies to your property before we build.
What size indoor riding arena do I need?
60x120 is a workable minimum for flat work and small jumps. 80x200 approaches a standard dressage arena with room around it. Span drives cost significantly, so it's worth being realistic about how you'll use it.
Concrete or stone for stall floors?
Compacted stone with rubber mats. It drains and it's easier on legs. Save concrete for aisles, wash stalls, and storage rooms.
